Social Marketing - Feedback

Looking for some feedback from experienced SEO guys/gals.. I've been doing SEO for many years and the new buzz seems to be in the social arena.
I have not taken the time to learn all this and really dont care too. However i dont want to miss out if this is something i should be learning.
I was hoping this was just a phase and would fizzle out, but its not looking that way.

How many of you old timers have adapted to these new techniques?
And have you found using these social tools actually help?

Social signals are the new backlinks (take a look at how the content farms view social signals). Not only that, there are good chances that the friends/acquaintances of the person sharing your link will be interested in your product too.

Give your customers the option to simply click a button to share your site with others in their demographic. There's absolutely no downside.

Creating a worthwhile social experience with your customers takes a lot of work, and it doesn't sound like you're interested in that part.
